TUNI Moodle currently offers two H5P activities: the H5P tool included in Moodle’s core (blue icon) and the separate H5P – Interactive Content plugin (black icon). The H5P – Interactive Content plugin will be phased out. Teachers: start using the newer H5P (blue) activity in your Moodle courses.

Timeline

  • Now: Create new H5P content using the new H5P tool and begin transferring old H5P activities to the new tool. See the guide Converting H5P Interactive Content to the new H5P format.
  • Summer 2026: Creating new H5P activities with the old tool will be disabled. Existing H5P activities will continue to function normally.
  • Summer 2027: Functionality of old H5P – Interactive Content activities cannot be guaranteed.

Reasons for the change

  • The future of the old H5P plugin is uncertain. It will be removed at some point, and support for the old tool is already limited.
  • The new H5P activity integrates better with other Moodle features, such as the gradebook and progress tracking.
  • The new H5P activity saves student submissions and provides attempts reports.
  • H5P content created with the new tool can easily be reused across multiple Moodle courses.

The main difference lies in how new H5P content is added and managed: a new H5P content is first created in the course’s H5P content bank, from which it is selected when adding an H5P activity to the course page or embedding it in the HTML editor. The H5P content bank can be found under More in the course menu.

A similar change is underway in Digicampus Moodle. See Digicampus’ announcement and timeline.
