The Turnitin courses for thesis supervisors were renewed in TUNI Moodle in August–September 2024 by replacing the old courses with new ones. Here, the Turnitin course refers to the Moodle course which consists of two Turnitin assignments and is used for Turnitin originality check of theses. This process only applies to TAU instructors' personal Turnitin courses that have been created for them by TUNI support services using the Turnitin course template and are more than one year old. The reform will not affect the Turnitin assignments of ordinary Moodle courses or bachelor's and master's seminar courses.
The old departing Turnitin courses have been renamed and they were hidden from stundents on 1.10.2024. New replacement Turnitin courses were created in August 2024 and supervisors are responsible for opening them to students.
You can identify the exiting course and its new equivalent by the course name:
- Turnitin Old (Supervisor Name) will expire 30.9.2024
- renamed old Turnitin course
- Available until the end of September 2024.
- Turnitin (Supervisor Name)
- new Turnitin course
- Hidden from students by default, requires supervisor actions before being available to students.
Thesis supervisor: You received an email on Monday 19.8. if the renewal concerns your Turnitin course.
- If you don't need your Turnitin course at the moment, then you don't need to do anything yet.
- If you know you won't need the Turnitin course later, you may want to delete the Turnitin course by moving it to the Moodle trashbin.
- If you have students to supervise and you use your Turnitin course, you should do the following immediately, no later than during September:
- Open the new Turnitin course for students using the Show course link on the right side (Managing Tools block in the right column)
- Add students to the new Turnitin course either
- By picking them up for the course from the Participants page or
- By setting an enrolment key and sending it to students who self-enroll to the course.
- Hide the old Turnitin course from students when students are in the new Turnitin course and no longer need access to the old course. This was done for you on 1.10.2024.
Student/thesis author: If the name of the Turnitin course you are using has changed or you don't find the the old course from TUNI Moodle anymore, contact your supervisor and ask him/her to add you to his/her new Turnitin course or to instruct you to elroll the course yourself. In addition to your instructor's Turnitin course, you can also receive a Turnitin report on your own work-in-progress in the Turnitin Practice Area. The official Turnitin originality check of the final thesis must always be done in the thesis supervisor's Turnitin course or other Moodle course instructed by him/her.
Old Turnitin courses were closed to students on 1.10., unless the supervisor did it earlier, and they will be permanently removed in November-December. The supervisor does not need to store anything from the old Turnitin course, such as Turnitin reports of old works.
The reason for the renewal of Turnitin courses is that the old courses have reached the end of their life cycle: their Turnitin assignments will cease to function completely next year. In the new courses, Turnitin assignments will work until the end of 2029.
In the future, unused Turnitin courses will be automatically deleted: if no one visits the course area for two years, the course area will be automatically moved to the Moodle trashbin. The supervisor will receive an email if his/her course is subject to this automatic deletion process.
