An architectural response to the current state of the world
Welcome to explore contemporary debates, emerging questions, and cutting-edge research that responds to the current state of the world. This seminar course in architectural theory offers a unique cross-section of the research being conducted in architecture at Tampere University. It is introducing diverse ways of understanding architecture, the built environment, and the role of design in a rapidly changing world.
The format of the course is based on readings, presentations, discussions, and critical reflection. Through texts and conversations led by various professors, researchers, and teachers from across the architecture unit, students will engage with topics such as regeneration and climate adaptation, transformative built environments, biodiversity, social justice, eco-social theory, empathic engagement, the role of aesthetics and experience, political dimensions of architecture, and hope admits the meta-crisis. The course showcases a wide range of ongoing research and different theoretical approaches and methodologies.
The seminar is intended for you who wish to deepen your understanding of the possibility of architecture to make a difference and architectural theory in general. It will strengthen your ability to read, present and discuss academic literature, and develop and communicate your own critical position as designers and thinkers. Along the way, we will practice academic discussion, argumentation, and the articulation of ideas that connect theory and design.
