Fundamentals of qualitative research
Research design and logic
This course is designed for doctoral researchers who want to acquire and develop skills in qualitative research design and logic. The course will cover:
· Qualitative thinking, and the practice of asking yourself difficult methodological questions.
· Why qualitative approaches might be suitable and what they can offer, what kinds of knowledge, ontological positioning, and insights they can produce.
· How to develop purposeful and theoretically grounded research questions and how to carry out ‘good’ qualitative study
After completing the course, the participant
- understands what kind of knowledge can be achieved through qualitative inquiry,
- is aware of what kinds of different methods are usually used in qualitative research,
- is able to make connections between certain kinds of epistemological thinking, theoretical approach, interpretive paradigms, and certain kinds of methods,
- understands the interconnection between chosen qualitative methods and attainable arguments.

A mixture of lectures, discussion, and participative workshops, with presentations and group discussion focused on students’ projects.
