Human Rights and Visual Arts: Migrants, Refugees, and Citizens

This interdisciplinary course examines the intersection of human rights and visual arts, focusing on the experiences of migrants, refugees, and citizens. Addressing the interplay between visual arts and human rights, students will examine human rights both as an object of study in visual arts and as a means to express one’s ideas through visual artworks. Through a combination of theoretical discussions, case studies, and visual analysis, students will explore how visual arts can be a powerful tool for understanding, expressing, and advocating for human rights, and how a set of human rights legal frameworks can be a facilitator in doing so. The course will delve into the role of visual arts in representing the experiences of marginalized populations, as well as its potential in social scientific research.
